"“If it is man’s privilege to be independent, it is equally his duty to be inter-dependent.” 1

– Mahatma Gandhi

The Women’s Bean Project (WBP, hereafter) is a place where women can go when other options have failed. The story of a young woman who left home at fifteen because she felt she did not belong is compelling. Imagine a young girl, then seventeen, who was an addict. A young girl, who roamed the streets, slept on the couches of strangers, and even slept in a make-shift camper. It was in this camper where Marcelina saved her boyfriend’s life. She revived him by giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation when he fell to the ground after “shooting up.” She didn’t stop using drugs after this experience; instead, she put a needle in her arm again. She ended up in jail where she learned her younger brother had died.

This was then when she realized how lost she was without her family. She wanted to be a better daughter to her mother, a better sister to her brothers and sisters, and a better mother to her own children. She wanted to go home and the WBP could help her achieve that. The Women’s Bean Project worked closely with organizations that helped women transition back into society. Marcelina was one of these women. Marcelina graduated with the class of April 2009 WBP graduates and now has a chance to be there for her new grandson.

Using business to create social change is difficult. Employing women with little work experience and, who are, by situation, not efficient, in fact, affects efficiency. Establishing solid partnerships with organizations that could provide additional training and funding resources and businesses that are willing to support these women is central to the sustainability of WBP. It is difficult to create routine schedules when the majority of the women are required to meet outside obligations such as meetings with parole officers, probationary requirements, housing and child benefit meetings, and the like. The WBP has been proactive in managing the social impact the organization has on the community.
